First, ground yourself with a few breaths, or a mantra, or a visualization.
Draw a card.
In your intuition journal, write down your initial impressions of the theme, mood, and message of the card.
Make note of the following:
Is its message light and happy, or dark and heavy? Notice the colour, postures, and overall theme.
Is it narrative or conceptual? If it’s a scene from a story, what’s the main thrust of the action? If it’s mostly objects or abstract, what emotional note do they strike within you?
Are there people depicted? If so, are they solitary, coupled or in a group? Is there tension or harmony between them?
If there are plants, animals or minerals shown, what are they symbolic of?
What is the overall energy of the card like? Is there a receptive yin or assertive yang quality, or is it balanced?
If there is a classical element depicted (air, fire, water, earth), is it strong or subtle? Ebbing or flowing? Active or still? Supportive or smothering?
What other associations, implications or messages might there be beyond what is actually pictured? Allow your mind to free associate for a moment.
What is the overall emotional tone of the card?
What truth might this card speak to you about your life?
